European Union proposes strong partnerships with third countries of origin
In an informal video conference on 15 March 2021, the European Union’s foreign affairs and home affairs ministers proposed more comprehensive partnerships with third countries of origin, including the use of the ‘Erasmus’ programme.
The foreign affairs and home affairs ministers discussed the external aspects of the European Union’s migration policy, under the new pact on migration and asylum. The ministers concentrated on migration as an important element in relations with key third countries. Joseph Borell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated that it is not possible to manage migration without a strong partnership with these countries, and legal migration opportunities must also be part of the equation. EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, also called for “tailor-made partnerships” to be offered to non-EU countries.

In this connection, the European Commission will launch a “Talent Partnerships” initiative to cooperate with non-EU countries and promote legal migration and mobility. It will also present new proposals on ‘skills and talent’ to better meet skills and labour migration needs in the EU.
